I read an interview about this earlier this week with one of the US women's volleyball team. I cannot find it at the moment (this is part of the interview I saw before), but it basically said that they don't think of them as bathing suits, they think of it as the least restrictive uniform they can possibly have as far as extra clothing getting in the way and being uncomfortable when they are stretching and diving for the ball.

It seems weird to me too, but then again, I'm not comfortable in a bikini when I'm alone in my bedroom, let alone on international TV, so.

I remember hearing a few years ago one of the teams on the US circuit tried to get permission to wear thong bikinis, as they thought it would improve TV ratings.
