I know there's been a lot of unease in fandom regarding the reveal of Castiel as an angel, and concern that angels are, well...lame. I understand the opinions, but what I hope (and expect) is that Kripke et al. will continue to allow for now absolutes, no absolute good or absolute evil -- all shades of gray. And I think HOTH pretty much backs this expectation, with its talk of angels being fearful beings. I'm not expecting Castiel to be all goodness and light. Maybe his intentions are good, but his methods questionable. Maybe he won't be fussed if people die if it leads to what he considers the greater good. In the same way that we're told Ruby is 'different' than other demons, and helping Sam for whatever reason she may have, I have a feeling Castiel won't be a pussycat.
Anyway. I love the idea of angels not being sweet and peaceful, but rather badass and dangerous and with their own agendas. It reminds me of how the arcangel Gabriel was portrayed in "Constantine." Gabriel was actually one of the antagonists in the movie -- see below:
Let me add that I don't think the show is going to be as religion-focused as "Constantine" is. On the extras of the season 1 DVD set, Sera Gamble and Raelle Tucker talk with glee about offending the fundies as much as possible. The show hasn't ever been very kind to /any/ religion that I can recall.
At any rate, I'm hopeful for this season, certainly far more so than I was for last season.
