I know a lot of you are Lost fans -- I counted myself as one for a long while, too -- and I know tonight is the long-awaited season 4 premiere. I know you all want to watch that. But would you please consider taping it and watching Supernatural live instead?

Supernatural has always been a bubble show. It survives (and holds its ratings) week to week despite airing opposite Grey's Anatomy, CSI and The Office, in what is the toughest night on network television. The CW, for whatever reason, rarely promotes Supernatural at all (Dawn Ostroff, head of the CW, has even said that she "doesn't get" Supernatural).

It's a quality show, though, and it deserves better. It's so much more than a show about beautiful boys driving around in a beautiful classic car (which I realize might be the way it appears to those who haven't watched it). At its heart, Supernatural is about family, about two guys who have no one else in the world but each other; who exist in a blue-collar, underground sort of world in order to fight the good fight every day of their lives -- doing what's right without ever being recognized or thanked. They live in one cheap hotel after another and survive off of credit card fraud and hustling pool. Dean traded his soul to a demon in order to save Sam's life; now Sam's desparate to save his brother before Dean's last year runs out.

I wish I had the eloquence to do the show justice.

Please consider watching Supernatural tonight. Lost doesn't need the ratings -- obviously, they'll make a killing tonight. Supernatural needs every single viewer it can get. So Tivo or tape Lost, but please, please watch Supernatural live.

I'm a supernatural fan, myself. I don't know if asking non-neilson viewers to pitch in and watch a show will actually help, though. Never really understood how TV viewer ratings get generated anyway :P

Well, non-Nielsen families aren't counted, as such, but when more people watch and then tell their friends, who tell their friends, who maybe are Nielsen familes... or something like that. *g*

I think it does help; maybe not immediately, but with a show like Supernatural? Like I said, we need every single viewer we can get.

the tivo numbers are counted now though... perhaps just asking people to tivo Supernatural, even if they don't watch it?

That's a good point. I wonder, though -- do they give as much 'credit' to tivo'd shows as ones watched live?

live shows only count if you have a nielsen box.

Oh, I know; I just wondered if they counted Tivo'd viewings the same as they count Nielsen box ratings.

It seems strange, but apparently they don't montior anything that goes into a tivo live, they only monitor when the tivo records something to timeshift it - it talks to the great big tivo center in the sky, and it gives a nice report out to the big wigs.

They are giving more weight to itunes lately though.

I'm confused--I watched LOST last night, and I'm pretty sure that was the premiere (and also the last episode of LOST I'll ever watch, but that's for other reasons.)

I'll be happy to watch Supernatural tonight. *g*

*shifty eyes* Yeeeeah, that's right! There's no Lost premiere tonight. None at all. *cough* *shifty eyes*

*g*

AFAIK, there are two eps of Lost tonight -- one repeat at 8, and one new one at 9. Maybe it's the second ep of the season? I dunno.

Either way, I'm glad you're watching Supernatural, hon. *hugs*

I would if I could.

But being in Germany, I have to wait until tomorrow to, eh, you know, not do something illegal. OMG, I can't wait!

I really wish there was a way to measure overseas viewers. I mean, seriously, TV doesn't live just within the shows' countries of origin anymore -- with the internet, anyone in the world can watch any show in the world. Nielsen needs to take that into account.

I think you were very eloquent! You know, I didn't watch Supernatural for a long time simply because the actors were too pretty. I figured the audience they were courting was much too young for me. But I think we all know what happened when I finally watch. ;)

Aww, thank you!

And I'm with you on the "they're too pretty" thing. I didn't think there was any way I'd like the show. If it hadn't been for the incessant "SamandDeanomg" on my flist, I might never have watched at all.

They waited too long to keep my interest in Lost. So I will most definitely be watching Supernatural. As will at least one of my co-workers...we were discussing it today at work. :) And I reconnected with an old friend this week, whom I will do my very best to recruit into the fold. ;)

I just happened by and noticed your post. I hope you don't mind me commenting.

I went back and forth between which one to watch, but I've been losing interesting in Lost over the last couple of seasons, and found I much preferred to watch Supernatural, which rarely disappoints. So yes, I watched Supernatural, and thought it was a really good episode. I hope the rest of the season is as high-energy.

I think this is the season I give up on Lost altogether.

I watched LOST live and taped Supernatural (sorry), but I figured since I don't have a Tivo and I am not a Nielsen family, it wouldn't matter which show I taped and which one I watched. I am planning on buying Supernatural from ITunes to be counted that way, and I have sent an email to the CW to tell them I watched Supernatural last night (which I did, just not live).

Oh, and I also converted a LOST friend of mine to the Supernatural way of life, who did the exact same thing that I did last night. ;)
