I have a bad feeling about this. /han solo

First of all, just.../why/? It's fanfic. It's not nearly as interesting to them as it is to us. And if they /did/ want to read it, well, it's pretty easily accessible all over the place. Also, appointing yourself the judge of what's the best fanfic = recipe for disaster.

And, you know, I get not wanting to send TPTB Wincest and slash, but if you're going to exclude those because you want to keep it as close to canon as possible, I'd say you'd better exclude all AUs and anything rated above PG13 (since the show itself is rated TV-14.)

But in general, just...gah, no. Fanfic is for the fans, full stop.

OK, here is my thinking. How is it wrong and invasive to bring up fanfic to the boys at a convention but it's OK to send them said fanfic? I don't get it.

From: [identity profile] fangirlsays.livejournal.com
Yeah, that's my thinking, too. I just...I really don't think it's as interesting to them as it is to us. That's why they're in LA writing episodes of the show and we're hanging around LJ talking about fanfic. *g*

Oh, dear god.

Someone is also putting together a photo album of posed photos Jared has taken with fans at cons to present to him, which is just so... clueless. There's a reason you're paying Jared to be in a picture with you, and he's being paid -- a picture of you with Jared is meaningful to you and means nothing to him.

I mean, I get the thinking behind it -- wanting to give something personal to a person who has everything, you know? But, yeah, in the same vein as the fanfic book for TPTB, I don't know that it means as much to him as it does to us.

It's just the same typical fangirl thinking -- we think about our BSOs all the time, so they must think about US all the time! Which... not so much.

*laughs* I had that same reaction but was afraid to say anything about it. The only thing I can think of is maybe Jared really likes looking at himself?

Hi! I'm the one putting the Photobook together for Jared. He actually has expressed interest in what the photos look like, and I know from my photo ops with him, he puts a lot of thought into how he looks in them.

He really cares a lot about his fans. He goes out of his way to make sure we get the most of our few moments with him. This is just our way of giving something back to him.

He always asks where everyone is from, so I'm making sure the home states or counries are noted with each pic. Also, all the donated money that is left over will be donated to the Animal Rescue Site in his name, and I know he'll love that.

I saw that and did a massive amount of eyeroll. They aren't going to read fanfic, especially Kripke.

Something tells me that Jared did NOT mean online fanfiction when he answered that question in the Australian interview. -.-;;

I mean, if they /did/ want to read fanfic -- it's right exactly hard to find.

What did Jared say about fanfic?

Date: 2008-06-27 11:22 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] blackjedii.livejournal.com
It's in the un, Channel Ten Australia interview? The one with three/four parts?

One of the questions was if Jared read/liked fanfiction. And he said that he didn't read "them" although he owned a few because he was trying to stay close to Kripke and the other writer's vision of Sam but maybe when the show was finished he'd read the books and reminesce.
Which sounds a whole lot like he was talking about the novels, not the fanfic.
Here are the links if you haven't seen em (they're awesome!!)

I do believe he mentioned picking up "the books" and reading them, some phrasing to that extent. I don't think he was talking about online fanfic, either.

Thanks for the link! And yeah, it sounds to me like he's talking about the tie-in novels.

I should probably start off with saying that I don't actually think that Kripke, etc. are even going to give a rat's ass about this. But what I personally think IS cool, is the idea of a fandom-collected list of recs for the various seasons that is based on what people liked and not on "elitist writing/my milkshake is better than yours".

I somehow doubt that this is ever really going to get much attention from Kripke, Jensen or Jared or anybody who works on SPN so maybe this is why I'm not bothered by this. I see this more as a fan reference.

I have no problem collecting fanfic into one place (although it does irk me to have slash and wincest excluded). I don't know how it can be done without causing wank, especially since it seems like it's just one person's opinion on things.

Agreed!

What I find confusing though is that ckll is not going around yet, making posts how people are haters (because they *gasp* disagree), bashers and meanies. Apparently she DOES sleep. That's shocking!

Tee hee hee, your icon's hilarious!

While the idea is good in theory, it'll never work in practicality. For one, because none of them read fanfic. Last I checked, fanfic was for... you know... the fans. Not the actors. And that whole "best of" thing?

Heh, define "the best". Please. There's no way that's going to fly.

Yeeeah. It's uncomfortable, because I think the person is trying to do something nice, but...I don't think they're as interested in fanfic as she thinks they are.

Oh man, I'm not even in the fandom, but I can still tell that this little project has WANK written all over it in 20 pt. bold.

Yeah, it sorta covers all the bases -- elitism, anti-wincest/slash and shoving fanfic under the noses of the celebrities. The wank trifecta!

I'm a big supporter of people creating works that are meaningful to them, whether that's original fiction, fan fiction, music videos, art (original or fan oriented).

I also know that depending on the author or creator, fan fiction is a touchy subject, legally speaking. Some authors don't mind, and some will literally tell you that they can't know about fan fiction because they will be forced to take legal action to protect their copy right.

So, while I like the idea of a fan community putting together a "Best Of" compilation, I think it's a terrible idea to do so as something for the original creator (or people involved, such as the actors). It's a good idea to share among fans, but that's about it.

Plus, I hate censorship. I'd rather have it all then try to exclude something just to measure up to an arbitrary standard of acceptable.

Opt-Out thread

Fanfic is for the fans. Exactly.

Plus Eric can wink at us so long as we keep our distance, but this? Just sends up flashing becons and neon lights announcing that we're out here. This would remove plausible deniability on the part of Eric or whomever, and sets us ALL up for that nasty lil' critter called "Cease and Desist."

Nooo, thanks. Thankfully they DO have an opt-out thread here:

i'm all for playing in the fandom sandbox - hell, i've done it for years - but the way that usually works? the adults sit on the porch and drink while the kids play, and they usually don't want you to bring them a shovelful of sand.

(i always feel sorry for the actors/producers/whoever when they get this kind of thing shoved at them. they have to act like they're pleased to be given whatever it is, and you *know* they're thinking, "... wtf?")
