Eric Kripke = the new Joss Whedon*

I'm writing this as I read the flist, getting more and more gobsmacked at exactly how awesome Eric Kripke really is, and how much more there is to Supernatural than even we fans realized.



So, the Yellow-Eyed Demon has a name: Azazel. And, as pointed out by bowtrunkle, we were foreshadowed for this little fact way back in 2X01, "In My Time of Dying". How? John Winchester told us.

Remember the symbol John drew in the hospital basement, when he was summoning the YED?



That? Is Azazel's sigil. Kripke was telling us, more than a season ago, who the YED was. This, my friends is quality storytelling -- Joss Whedonesque storytelling. If ever there was a doubt that Kripke knows where the story is going -- and has always known -- it's clear now that he does. He's not a Chris Carter (X-Files) or a J.J. Abrams (Lost), spinning a story out of control by simply adding questions instead of answering any, with no clear idea of how the story ends. Kripke gets it. I've said this all along -- he gets it because he's a fanboy himself. He's one of us, and that makes all the difference.

Random trivia: When Credence Clearwater Revival's "Run Through the Jungle" is playing, the captioning says it's an Iggy Pop song (I missed getting the title). This is the second time I'm noticed different music noted in the captioning than we're actually hearing -- in "Folsom Prison Blues", captioning said the song of the same name by Johnny Cash is playing, but it was actually a completely different song. Again, I can't remember which, just that it DEFINITELY WASN'T JOHNNY CASH KTHX.

More once I've seen the ep a couple more times. :D

Seriously, someone needs to make up a line diagram or something to keep track of all this stuff. Maybe Sam could do that for us, as he tries to figure out who some of these demons are and how they connect to him. The dude has demons who want to kill him, demons who want to help him, hunters who want to kill him, hunters who want to help him, and the FBI and heaven knows how many police departments wanting to throw him in jail. I'd be keeping a tally sheet in my wallet if I were him, just to keep it all straight.

Definitely. I'm thinking of starting some sort of master list for symbolism, use of colors, repeated uses of phrases, etc, mostly just because OMG this is so not your usual TV show.
