First there were the internet rumors that Palin's infant son was actually born to her oldest, 17-year-old daughter Bristol. Then came the revelation that Bristol is five months pregnant. Now we hear that Palin's husband had a DWI.

Any more skeletons in Palin's closet?

I kinda feel bad for her family. I mean, it's hard enough to be a pregnant teenager without being shoved front and center for all the world to judge. And Mr. Palin's DWI conviction was 24 years ago. And obviously, everyone makes mistakes.

On the other hand, I'm remembering the Rupublican feeding frenzies that happened during Clinton's Lewinski situation, and more recently when John Edwards admitted having an affair, and a lot of my sympathy is kinda dissipating.

One nice thing is seeing that Obama's taking the high road, and declaring kids off-limits for his campaign and supporters. As opposed to back during the Clinton administration, when John McCain told a Republican gathering the following joke: "Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly? Janet Reno is her father."

I don't equate this with John Edwards or the Lewinsky scandal because those were actions that Bill Clinton and John Edwards did themselves. These are instead the misdeeds of family members. I feel really bad for the 17 year old most of all.

I wonder if McCain knew about this before he chose her.

This has shades of "what goes around, comes around" . . . though why bring up a 24 year old DWI, media?

Going after people's families is so not cool. Since when do their families, or ancient mistakes, have to do with their politics now?

people are always going to sling mud at each other if they think their side will benefit from it. i'm sure there are things in obama or biden's closet that compare with mccain/palin. i try to ignore it and just focus on what's important: what they can do for our country.

You may be right, but the thing that makes me very discomforted about Palin is her membership in a political party in Alaska that wants Alaskans to vote on seceding from the US. That's just inherently untenable, to me, in a candidate for one of the two highest offices.

I feel bad for Bristol Palin. But I also think that accepting the nomination knowing that this would come out was an awful thing for her mother to do. Yes, families should be off-limits, but in an election where you've had people attacking Michelle Obama for appearing at an event with Louis Farrakhan's wife, or going over her senior thesis to try to prove that she hates white people, well...karma's a fucking bitch, isn't it?

I do think this raises legitimate questions about McCain's judgement--did anyone actually vet this woman? At all?--and about Palin's, as well. If you're going to push the abstinence-only line for sex ed, it might be a good idea to, you know, not be able to serve as an example of why abstinence-only doesn't work.

*growls at John McCain* That's awful! I was too young during the elections when Bill Clinton ran for president to pay all that much attention to what as going on, so I missed that little gem. *passes it along to a few friends who are still thinking John McCain isn't the worst idea in the world*

The whole thing seems to be turning out awful for the Republicans. And I can't say I'm sorry. I just saw a headline on CNN.com speculating about when Palin would withdrawal from the race.
