Root Canals

As it happens, I just had a root canal, on an infected broken tooth. I went from being incredibly sensitive to hot/cold and unable to eat on one side of my mouth back to normal in a few hours.

As long as they numb you up pretty good, it doesn't hurt. They really had to go at mine, and I didn't feel a twinge. It's just mentally disturbing. It feels really, really wrong, and it sounds worse. But...the tooth pain goes away, which is more than worth the time. And the soreness is manageable, and usually fades within a few days.

Two things do suck. First, it's damned expensive. I think that hurt more than the procedure. Second, it's not a one-visit deal. You'll need to get the root canal done, then a crown needs to be made, etc. So the soreness part repeats as they work through the process. But...again...it's a lot less painful than the actual tooth pain (at least in my experience).

Good luck!

Thanks! Yeah, I'm dreading the cost as much as the pain. Well...okay, I'm dreading the pain more. Because when it comes to dental work, I am the wimpiest wimp who ever wimped.

I appreciate the encouragement. :D

That's frustrating. {sympathetic smile, HUGS, SQUEEZES, BIG SQUEEZES, GREAT BIG SQUEEZES, GREAT BIG LONG TIGHT SQUEEZES, GREAT BIG LONG TIGHT ROCKING SQUEEZES}

I'll second the comment above. A root canal isn't nice, but it's better than a sore tooth. {smile}

You can expect a long procedure, then a bruise around the tooth. The bruise is pretty painful for a couple of days, then less painful for a day or two before calming down. It isn't pleasant, but it will pass.

The best part is that after the root canal, you're past the worst. It should be getting better after that. {Smile, BIG HUG, BIG SQUEEZE, GREAT BIG SQUEEZE, GREAT BIG LONG TIGHT ROCKING SQUEEZE}

i had a root canal done on my front tooth when i was...11? 12? i don't remember exactly, but i DO remember that it was uncomfortable but not super horribly painful. i guess i would equate it to being numb and having someoe pushing/pulling on the numb area: you feel the sensation but not the pain. however! i should note that was 15 years ago, but i hope it's still similar in terms of pain level.

The push/pulling while numb sensation sounds a lot like the heart catheterization I had in the spring, which wasn't so bad once they gave me something to help me relax. Okay...that sounds a little less traumatic than I was thinking it'd be. Thanks so much, hon! *hugs*

My belated two cents on root canals.

I've had two done, opposite sides of my mouth. I'll say that the root on the upper row was much more time-consuming and uncomfortable than the root on the lower row, but I found neither procedure too very painful. Except for the needle. I swear, they numbed up my gums and that damned Novocaine needle still stung. But hey, once that's done with, it's smooth sailing.

I'll concur with other comments that it is uncomfortable; the sound can be horrendously unnerving and there's a lot of pushing and tugging and nudging, but nothing I'd call outright pain. I was fitted with temporary crowns both times to hold me over until the proper ones came in and, annoyingly, both times my temporaries popped loose long before they were due. I was very unhappy.

And whatever you do, don't let the dentist send to bloody Sweden for your crown. My first one had to ship over and it really showed in the cost. (The dentist got a royal earful for pulling that stunt on us, too.) My second crown was made Stateside and, while not cheap, was by no means as exorbitantly costly.

Sweden? Sheesh!

The tooth is actually already crowned. My dentist hoped the crown would solve the pain problem, but he told me at the time if it didn't, he could do the root canal through the crown. So, at least that's one part of it I don't have to do.

Weirdly enough, it's not been hurting as much inthe past day or so. I guess I'll hang on a few more days and see how it goes. Thanks for telling me how your experience went. :D
