So, after reading that heartbreaking list of celebrities who think poor, misunderstood Roman Polanski shouldn't have to be punished for drugging and raping a 13-year-old girl, I was much more encouraged to see this list of celebrities who are speaking out against him.

Dear Hollywood:

JSYK, many of us are taking notes. For myself, I can tell you that the movies, television and other art forms that I will be watching and supporting in the future are being determined right now. If you think a man who raped a child should not have to pay for his crimes, I have no use for you or any entertainment of yours that may be offered from now on.

JSYK.

Watching what you are doing there,
Me.

I love how Woody Allen is one of the first names on the pro-Polanski list.

Awkwarrrrrrd!

Me, I'm with George Stefanopoulis, Bare Naked Lady Steven Page, Jewel, Kirstie Alley (hey, we all hafta have some awkward, huh), Kevin Smith, and thank the Lord Neil Gaiman!

Srsly. HOW SURPRISING to find Woody Allen on that list.

And man, I think I would've turned in my membership card to the human race if Neil Gaiman had spoken out for Polanski. Phew.

Yeah, after reading that list of people who apparently think raping a child is A-Okay if you're a talented person, it was a huge relief to see some people who weren't batshit crazy.

*hugs Neil like whoa*

I'm going to go be sick. There have been a few names I've been watching for, hoping against anything they would not turn up on that first list and they just have. My only hope is that, maybe, like far too many people, they are not fully aware of the events in question considering the way it has been portrayed, then and now, in the media. Please. Because I've just seen the two people whose work I've ever come close to idolizing publicly put down their names in support for a horrible man.

If it makes you feel any better, apparently one of the most powerful men in Hollywood, Harvey Weinstein, is emailing everyone he knows and encouraging them to support Polanski. It may be that many of the people who are signing it are being pressured into it. Which is no excuse, in my opinion, but might be considered mitigating? maybe?

Okay, no, not really, but there it is.

Incidentally, the link goes to the post where I read about Weinstein's actions, but the post links to the article, which, I'm disgusted to report, is an editorial by Weinstein himself. You don't want to read it. Trust me.

Thank you for sharing these links, specially the good list. I'm glad some people in Hollywood still believe in justice.

That petition is pretty much the definition of shit list. What kind of person calls rape 'a case of morals'? They are despicable.

I don't think he needs to be arrested!

I think he just needs to watch Dawson's Creek.

For all eternity.

Locked in a movie theater that smells like old cheese and locker room socks.

With lots of salty salted popcorn and no water.

Also the theme song will play every five minutes.

He is an ARTIST.

Therefore he should like ART.

Hey I left out the screaming kid behind him and the two teenagers three rows back who constantly throw popcorn and M&Ms at his neck. That's me being merciful.

I REALLLLLLY agree with you. This is a dividing line that is most definitely NOT BLURRY. Would they defend anyone ELSE who did that no matter how long ago?

I know I'll be in the minority here, and if I'm reading the petition as it is presented correctly, I find I agree with it, or at least this portion:

"By their extraterritorial nature, film festivals the world over have always permitted works to be shown and for filmmakers to present them freely and safely, even when certain States opposed this.

The arrest of Roman Polanski in a neutral country, where he assumed he could travel without hindrance, undermines this tradition: it opens the way for actions of which no-one can know the effects."

I don't support Polanski's actions, but I do support the idea expressed above.

And in regards to Polanski's actions, I don't side with him. I side with the victim, Samantha Geimer, who has moved on, forgiven him, and even asked LA Prosecutors to drop the case, multiple times. Being a victim of child rape myself, I respect and understand why. It is unfair to her and her family to have the details brought up time and time again. It is also unfair for rape victims suffering now, this year, who can better use the resources being expended on this case.

The only reason this has been dragged out for over 30 years is because Polanski dragged it out. If he had simply served his time back when he admitted he raped her, everyone involved could have moved on. That's completely on him.

That is true, he did flee from the sentence; I don't defend that. I defend the victim's formal request since 1997 to drop the case and move on.
